Trust my Travel logoThe Cotswolds Circular is a 3-day road cycling tour around the Cotswolds, covering around 45 miles a day through the wonderful hills and valleys and picturesque villages of this outstanding Area of Natural Beauty.

The route will take you through the limestone built Cotswold gateway towns of Chipping Campden and Burford, lovely villages nestled in valley bottoms and on hillsides such as Bibury and Lower Slaughter, alongside rivers and streams and up and over many a wooded hill.

As the distances are a little shorter per day than other Velobreaks routes you’ll have time left over to stop and explore some of the sights or just kick back and enjoy a decent lunch or coffee along the way.

The overnight stops of Cirencester, Oxford and Moreton in Marsh offer plenty of options for interesting food and drink.

Highlights

  • The glorious honey coloured Cotswold villages and towns
  • The breathtaking views over the Vale of Evesham from the edge of the Cotswolds at Snowshill
  • Discovering charming 300 year old country pubs in the heart of this ancient landscape.
  • The sublime ride down the Windrush valley.

Day 1

Arrive at your accommodation in Cirencester, where you can park your car for the rest of the trip.

Day 2 (46.5 miles, Ascent 1,854ft)

From Cirencester you head north east through the southern part of the Cotswolds, not forgetting to stop and take a photo of the famous Arlington Row cottages in Bibury, before heading north to cycle down the beautiful Windrush valley to Burford. A loop around leafy West Oxfordshire and an ancient stone bridge over the Thames brings you into the historic university town of Oxford for your overnight stop.

Day 3 (46.5 miles, Ascent 2,396 ft)

You’ll leave Oxford to the north, cycling through the narrow streets of Jericho, out through the Oxford suburbs and then along the quiet country lanes of the Evenlode valley. A climb up into the eastern part of the Cotswolds takes you up and down over the glorious rolling hills of North Oxfordshire until you head up the Stour valley to your overnight destination of the old stone market town of Moreton in Marsh.

Day 4 (47.8 miles, Ascent 2,756 ft)

From Moreton in Marsh you head north-west to take in one of the crown jewels of the Cotswolds , Chipping Campden , with its historic high street running below the stunning wool church at the top of the hill. Turning south-west you climb up to Snowshill on the western escarpment and then south through one glorious Cotswold village after another through to Bourton on the Water and Northleach. Running parallel with the old roman road, Fosse Way, you cycle along quiet country lanes to your finishing point in Cirencester.
